In high school, Wilder played Willy Loman in his own adaptation of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. In theater and studied at the Old Vic School in Bristol, England. The young boy got his start in comedy by trying to perk up his bedridden mother’s spirits (she died when he was 23).
Gene Wilder dies at 83; ‘Willy Wonka’ star and Mel Brooks collaborator
Gene Wilder as one of my earliest heroes. Blazing Saddles, Willy Wonka, are CLINICS on comic acting. You were one of the great screen comedians. The whole movie wasn't funny, he said, like the part where a cross-eyed governor is making lewd comments to a sex-object secretary. In one scene, Wilder, playing Jim, tries along with Sherriff Bart to get the attention of two members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Frank’s documentary suggests that acting proved most valuable to Wilder as a means of connecting to his fellow human beings, whether on set or through the screen. Wilder directed and wrote several of his own films, including The Woman in Red (1984). With his third wife, Gilda Radner, he starred in three films, the last two of which he also directed. Her 1989 death from ovarian cancer led to his active involvement in promoting cancer awareness and treatment, helping found the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Center in Los Angeles[1] and co-founding Gilda's Club. After his last acting performance in 2003—a guest role on Will & Grace, for which he received an Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series—Wilder turned his attention to writing.

For the 1971 musical fantasy based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fred Astaire and Joel Grey were recommended for the role of Willy Wonka. Springtime for Hitler, of course, would become The Producers (1968), written and directed by Brooks. For his portrayal of stressed-out accountant Leopold Bloom in his first major movie role, Wilder earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.
For the time being, Musk continues to own four other Bel Air properties he’d like to sell, each one done up in wildly divergent architectural styles and ranging in price from about $5 million to well north of $20 million. The occasional Twitter troll has said he plans to rent his next Los Angeles home, though records show his longtime girlfriend — celebrity musician Grimes — continues to own a snazzily renovated house in Pasadena, out in L.A.’s San Gabriel Valley. Much as he’s done in business, Elon Musk appears to be blazing his own trail when it comes to buying and selling houses. After listing all six of his Bel Air estates earlier this year to much fanfare, the Tesla and SpaceX tycoon is proving the naysayers wrong, slowly but surely unloading each of the properties. It was a gesture that was well appreciated by Walker-Pearlman.
Gene Wilder Remembered: What Hollywood Is Saying About the Legendary Actor
Thank you for the joy and the great memories. But before his diagnosis three years ago, Wilder’s nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, tells PEOPLE the actor “was living an idyllic life” in Connecticut and California. He spent his days playing tennis, writing and painting with his wife of almost 25 years Karen Boyer, a speech consultant he met while doing research for the 1989 film See No Evil, Hear No Evil.
At the end of recruit training, he was assigned to the medical corps and sent to Fort Sam Houston for training. He was discharged from the army a year later and returned to New York. A scholarship to the HB Studio allowed him to become a full-time student. At first living on unemployment insurance and some savings, he later supported himself with odd jobs such as a limousine driver and fencing instructor. Musk, who purchased the property in 2013, sold it for $7 million to an LLC managed by the screenwriter and producer Elizabeth Hunter, who is married to the filmmaker Jordan Walker-Pearlman, Wilder's nephew, Variety reported.

May you rest in peace, My heart is still heavy that you are gone, You will never be forgotten as long as i live, I am a very big fan, I loved all of your movies and you and richard Pryor are one of the greatest actors of all time.. Gene Wilder was one of my old time favorite actors. He always brought laughter to the screens. I remember watching him growing up in Willy Wonka and various other movies. In 1981, Wilder co-starred with Radner, a comedienne best known for her role as an original cast member on Saturday Night Live, in the Sidney Poitier-directed Hanky Panky. Although both were married at the time, they started a relationship on set and sought divorces so that they could be married in 1984.
"Hey, boys! Look what I got here!" Jim says tauntingly. "Hey, where the white women at?" Bart asks the Klan members. Brooks and his co-writers, including Richard Pryor, take shots at all of us -- the earnest, the dumb, the pious, the drunk, the greedy, the hopeful, the actors, and most of all, the racists.
“But I would really like to play a story of darker version of him,” he added. Some basic help and starters when you have to write a tribute to someone you love. Wilder released “Kiss Me Like A Stranger” in 2005. The memoir offered insights into Wilder’s love life, his work with stars such as Richard Pryor and Woody Allen and his fight with cancer. “All the cabinets are handmade, and they’re odd shapes.
He was a very funny actor who will be missed dearly. He has touched many lives and has been an inspiration to all who knew him. I enjoyed his work as he was an excellent actor. At age 26, Wilder decided that he "couldn't quite see a marquee reading 'Jerry Silberman as Macbeth'" and took the stage name Gene Wilder. He took his new first name from a character in a Thomas Wolfe novel, and his last from the playwright Thornton Wilder.

Musk was feeling generous toward Hunter and Walker-Pearlman, too. Records suggest he lent them as much as $6.7 million to finance the Wilder house purchase. Musk explained that he bought the Wilder home because it was across the street from his “main” residence and was set to be sold and demolished to make way for a larger, modern mansion. “I was, like, I think I’ll buy it and preserve the spirit of Gene Wilder,” he said.
