Jack and Ann Warner's home of five decades—the last intact estate from Hollywood's Golden Age in Beverly Hills—broke national records for the sale of a single-family residence. The swimming pool area had two enormous terraces— one with several lounge chairs, the other with an outdoor kitchen, barbecue and soda fountain. Warner enjoyed his lighted tennis court year round, and doubles matches were a feature of the Sunday parties.

At the Warner mansion, the front door opened into a two-story entrance hall, notable for its extraordinary parquetry floors with patterns executed in a variety of woods and a sweeping cantilevered staircase that led to the upstairs bedrooms. He tried his hand as a novelist in House on the Hill, with limited success (although it was later dramatised by Scottish Television). However, his sparkling journalism never went out of fashion – despite the fact that he had always warned that he never let a concern for facts get in his way if there was a good story to be told. His "'Ask Jack" column in the Glasgow Evening Citizen gave lively answers (most of them true) to readers' questions on all aspects of the City. He was often on television, with STV and BBC Scotland, and formed a winning partnership with Sir James Fergusson in the long-running radio series Round Britain Quiz.

The Jack House is a unique piece of California's elegant and colorful past which will transport visitors back to the Victorian era. The Jack family holds history with some of the most prominent players in the drama of Central California development. Active in ranching, politics, travel, banking, and land development, the Jacks lived in this fine two-story Victorian house for over 90 years and much of the family's original furnishings, artwork, kitchen utensils, dishes, and keepsakes are now on display for visitors.

The Rural 340B Access Act will fix the current gap in 340B eligibility for hospitals that close their inpatient services but keep emergency rooms open, helping ensure patients in rural and remote areas can continue to receive essential emergency care. I’m grateful to Representative Dingell for joining me in introducing this important legislation.”Rep. Debbie Dingell stated, “The closing of rural hospitals seriously impacts residents in remote areas who depend on their emergency rooms, in and outpatient care, and other critical services. 340B is a critical program that helps rural hospitals stretch scarce federal resources. The 340B program is essential for safety net hospitals serving Michigan’s most vulnerable communities, and this legislation will bridge a gap to ensure patients in rural areas will continue to have access to high-quality care.” – Brian Peters, CEO, Michigan Health & Hospital AssociationRead the full text of the bill here.

As it turned out, the Warners' next-door neighbor, silent-screen comedian Harold Lloyd, also had a nine-hole pitchand-putt course on his estate. Warner occasionally erected a temporary walkway over the wall between the two estates so that he and his guests could play all eighteen holes. In keeping with the Warner mansion's elegantly restrained façade, matinee-idol-turned-designer-to-the-stars William Haines decorated the rooms in a Georgian style, frequently adding his own whimsical touches. Haines counted some of the thirties and forties Hollywood legends among his clients, including Joan Crawford and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Carole Lombard, Norma Shearer and director George Cukor. He also helped popularize the Neoclassical style in Los Angeles homes during the thirties.

In this he described and analysed several notorious 19th-century murders, and miscarriages of justice, in the middle-class districts in the west of the city. Among these were the cases of Madeleine Smith, (played, like the rest of the cast, with a perfect English accent by Ann Todd in David Lean's 1949 film Madeleine) and Oscar Slater. In 1928, he got a job as a reporter on the Glasgow Evening Citizen, where he was involved in a number of sensational stories – including a tragic blaze at the Glen Cinema in Paisley in which 80 children had perished. He also attended an early demonstration of mechanical television by John Logie Baird. Meanwhile, he continued to act – mostly light parts (in the Scottish National Players as well as for BBC Radio).

Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt. For most people, a Sunday at the Warner estate meant a visit to the grounds but not to the house—except for the Hollywood elite or young actresses who visited the studio boss during his wife's frequent absences. Still, what splendid grounds landscape architect Florence Yoch created for the Warners, far grander than those of the estates of her other Hollywood clients, such as David O. Selznick and George Cukor. An invitation from the Warner estate replaced one from Pickfair as the most sought after in the thirties and forties movie community, but the reason was not Warner's warmth or goodwill. Although Warner was a brilliant businessman, he was widely feared for his ruthless practices in a rough-and-tumble Hollywood, and he was often mocked behind his back for his bad jokes. He regularly acted as restaurant critic for that paper, where, as usual, his partisanship for the city over-ruled any more nuanced judgements.

Many of his books had been commissioned and some were obviously meant to be "fun" books. Several others had been commissioned by local authorities or tourist boards with a view to promoting their areas. Large companies – especially builders and whisky distillers – commissioned histories of their success from him, as did the locally renowned "Western Baths". All of these commissions are testimony to his engaging style, as well as an investigative prowess derived from his journalism. He was also active politically, standing unsuccessfully in a 1962 by-election for Liberal Party in the Glasgow Woodside constituency, where he then lived. He also campaigned against the Glasgow Inner Ring Road and the construction of Glasgow's peripheral housing estates, such as Easterhouse and Nitshill, which resulted in the decline of traditional inner-city districts, a phenomenon known as Counter urbanisation. Built in 1957, the Jack house was designed by architects Russell C. Jack and John Allen, in collaboration with architect Pamela Jack, for Russell and Pamela’s own family.

During the next two decades the Warners expanded into film distribution with varying degrees of success, and in 1923 they formed Warner Bros. In the early twenties Warner Bros, had been a distinctly second-rank studio, whose best-known star was Rin Tin Tin. At times, the studio was so hard-pressed that Warner left his office by the back door in order to avoid creditors.

He spent a great deal of time in the "Ubiquitous Chip" restaurant and there is a caricature of him – buck teeth and all – by Emilio Coia still hanging over his habitual table. The restaurant was close to Jack's last home – a flat in a classic Glasgow tenement. His substantial Edwardian flat in Beaumont Gate, was in Dowanhill, where he had always aspired to stay. This, like his birth and childhood homes was of striking red sandstone – a Glaswegian architectural/visual code for "extremely well-off". Volunteer docents offer guided tours on Sundays from April through November, and the house is also open for holiday celebrations and special events.

The existing Spanish-style mansion, which had been the height of architectural chic in the mid-twenties, looked outdated by the mid-thirties, and it reminded the brash studio head of his failed first marriage. Warner consequently enlisted architect Roland E. Coate, who enlarged and rebuilt the mansion in the Georgian style with an impressive Greek Revival portico. Coate was well known in the conservative San Marino and Pasadena social circles during the twenties, but after designing producer David O. Selznick's nearby house, he had begun in the thirties to work more and more in flamboyant Beverly Hills. This estate, like so many other studio moguls' houses, was the symbol of Warner's hard-won success. The sons of a Polish immigrant shopkeeper, Jack, Harry, Albert and Sam Warner entered the movie business when they purchased a nickelodeon in Newcastle, Pennsylvania, in 1904.
